ARTIST STATEMENT :
"Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed” said Antoine Lavoisier on the conservation of the masses, during the change in states of matter. This notion may well apply to me in a spiritual way. As a repeat immigrant, I never cease to rediscover myself, to absorb, to assimilate and to recreate a new identity in my host country, without losing the original. I try to amalgamate new values and combine them with those learned in the Morocco of my birth. It is not always a success, but the final hybrid result always surprises me and is worth the effort. This journey is a great influence on my work as an artist. I am constantly trying to "persuade" porcelain to accept other materials. I push it to assimilate earth, plants, metals, glass, and minerals until the limits of the genre are exceeded and constitute an opportunity for the newly metamorphosed hybrid species to persist and survive. delicious and exhilarating. In this process, where I welcome the amalgamation of materials that creates the work, the new hybrid often triggers a stronger expression than previous identities. These moments of delicious and exhilarating discovery, constantly redefine the basis of my aesthetic criteria. The product of struggles and the fusion of materials often feels like a gift. My intuitive approach is linked to an attitude that I have developed as in life and relates to the way transformation simply occurs in living natural forms. It is a repetitive and soothing process that assuages my fears as I face the challenges of assimilating and bridging two cultures a material response to the complexity and fragility of life and identity.

"...Asmae Laraqui's installation The Coral Agony touched me. Pushing back the curtains, it felt like stepping into the sea with plastic jellyfish hanging and porcelain corals on the bottom. A meticulous creation that beautifully evokes the fragility of ecosystems." (Translation)
